A power cut can be a bit of an inconvenience, but for some people who rely on a constant electricity supply to stay alive, a power cut can be extremely stressful and challenging.

It could be that you need a fridge at all times to keep medication in, a stairlift, hoist or other accessibility equipment, or you may have medical equipment such as dialysis machines, a feeding pump or oxygen concentrator that you rely on.   So it’s a good idea to have a back-up plan in case there’s a power cut.

Northern Powergrid offer a Priority Services Membership, whereby you can inform them of your needs and in the event of a powercut, they can help you with things like hot meals, or transport to a friend or family member’s home.  It’s free to join, with no ongoing cost.  You can join by calling 0800 169 2996 or visiting their website www.northernpowergrid.com/care

The Priority Services Membership is also available to people who are elderly, have young children under five, have a chronic illness or mental health condition, need alternative communication support (eg BSL), have suffered a bereavement or need temporary support following surgery or illness.

Northern Powergrid have also produced a handy, easy-read booklet with all the details of how to report a power cut, and lots of useful tips on what you can do so you’re prepared if a power cut happens.  You can read the booklet here.
