Mesothelioma is a cancer that usually starts in the layers of tissue that cover each lung (the pleura). More rarely it can start in the peritoneum. The peritoneum is the layer of tissue that covers the organs in your tummy (abdomen).

Charities are a great resource to help support you or your loved ones on your cancer journey.  They can offer information and support in a variety of ways, practical, physical, emotional and financial.  Some offer helplines, with access to medically-trained staff, and others fund research into finding a cure or better treatment for cancer.  Please see below some charities that offer help.

Find a support group for Mesothelioma Cancer

It can be really useful to speak to other people who know how you are feeling because they have been there too.  Speaking to those who have a lived experience of cancer can be a great source of comfort.  Many support groups also invite speakers or have medical staff in attendance, so can be a great resource to help you on your cancer journey.  Here are some local support groups you may be interested in.

Mesothelioma Support Yorkshire (Messy)

We meet every month on Fridays between 2 – 4pm. Meetings will alternate between face to face meetings at Park Plaza and virtual via zoom.

The group aims to provide information, support and practical advice to people affected by Mesothelioma, including patients, friends and families.
All meetings are facilitated by Mesothelioma UK Nurse Specialist Simon Bolton. Working in collaboration with Yorkshire and Humberside Asbestos Victim Support Group (SARAG).
Meetings are free of charge and refreshments are provided.

A small, friendly, social group for people who have been bereaved by asbestos-related disease. We are here to listen and to provide support within a safe space.
We meet fortnightly online via Zoom; meetings take place every other Thursday, 10 – 11.30am (day and
time could be subject to change depending on service need). The group is open to those living in the Yorkshire & Humberside area.
Full one-to-one support is available if you are unfamiliar with using Zoom.
